One thing that I seem to hear often is that people are just unsure how to help someone struggling, or even what you should say.
I've put together a list of the Do's and Don'ts of talking to people struggling with their Mental Health.
If someone comes to you and explains that they are struggling you want to be understanding, sympathetic and not try to "snap them out" of it.
These can be crippling illnesses and need to be taken seriously! Especially if they are courageous enough to confide this with you!
What NOT to say to someone struggling with their Mental Health…
Just get over it
You need to get out more
You don't LOOK depressed/anxious
Things aren't that bad
But you have a great life/job/marriage etc.
Stop being so negative
Just snap out of it
Things could be so much worse
Stop feeling sorry for yourself
There's nothing wrong with you
It's all in your head
You sound crazy
You most definitely DO NOT want to dismiss them, or make them feel shame for their struggle...I guarantee they are already full of shame.
What to say to someone struggling…
It's OK, if you are not OK
How can I help you?
Would you like to spend time together?
We don't have to talk, but I can sit with you
Come over and sit with them, go for a walk
I love you, and I'm here
I'm here to listen if you need to talk
You matter to me
You are not alone
You are NOT a burden, you are loved and supported
I am here if/when you need me
I see you/hear you
You are enough
There is hope - you can recover from this
I have seen you go through hard things before, and I know you can this time!
I'm going to keep checking on you
Lastly, as always please know you're never alone in the struggle.
Reach out to someone, even me if you don't have anyone you're comfortable
